Al-Dayr or “the Monastery” is an unfinished tomb façade that during Byzantine times was used as a church.

So, what do we know exactly about this ancient city? – Petra was the ancestral capital of the Nabataean Kingdom, as well as being a significant trading outpost in this region. The Nabataeans established a network of caravan routes to bring spices, gold, silver, and more from India for their trade. This kingdom was so powerful and wealthy that they adorned the city with outstanding temples, arches, and palaces. Unfortunately, the emergence of sea trade routes, followed by an earthquake, led to the abundance of this enchanting place.

Put on your comfortable shoes because it’s time to explore the imposing city! Offering such a unique experience, it’s easy to get lost in its beauty. Upon your entrance, you will be stunned by the mysterious Djinn Blocks, the earliest tombs in Petra, believed to represent the Nabataean God, Dushara. Then, you will come across the carved façade of the Obelisk Tomb, a fine tomb with four pyramidal obelisks.

Catch your first glimpse of Al-Khazneh (Treasury) at the end of the winding Siq.

Make your way through the Siq Entrance, a 1-kilometer-long canyon with vibrant colors and unrivaled rock formations. Don’t rush towards Petra, leaving all this glory behind. Have a look along the walls to view the remains of the ancient channels that used to supply Petra with water. Take your time to admire the beautiful stone blocks, covered with sacred carvings, called baetyl. These artifacts and inscriptions may indicate that Petra was a holy city and a prominent religious center. Of course, the relief sculpture of camels, along with their merchants, will capture your attention.

Reaching the end of the Siq, you will get a glimpse of the famous Rose City, the unmistakable Treasury, also known as Al-Khazneh. Get lost in the half-built, half-carved city as you marvel at the iconic mix of natural and man-made architecture. Stand in awe in front of the mighty temple, carved out of pink and red rocks. You have the option to explore the wondrous spot on foot or enjoy a horse ride. Is this place starting to look familiar? – If you’re an Indiana Jones fan, you might have noticed this area in one of the movies.
