We will take you to Jordan River, the biblical “Bethany Beyond Jordan”, where Jesus Christ was baptized, the place where his ministry began.
Today every pilgrim in the Holy Land seeks to plunge into the holy water of Jordan and gain a sense of belonging to the Savior. In this place the prophet Elijah crossed the Jordan River from where the Holy Mary of Egypt went beyond the Jordan.
Then we will drive to the biblical Mount Nebo, rising over the Dead Sea, the Jordan Valley, Jericho and the Jerusalem Hills, from where Prophet Moses saw the Promised Land. We will see the places that the prophet himself saw and visit the place of his supposed burial. The skillfully executed beautiful ancient Byzantine mosaics, as well as the huge stone that served as the entrance to the monastery, and the basilica with the chapel of the Virgin, evoke special tender feelings.
The last point of our today’s tour is Madaba, the first mention of which dates back to the Bronze Age. The Bible mentions Madaba more than once as the Moabite border town. During the existence of the empires of Rome and Byzantium, the city was part of the province of Arabia, which was created by the Roman emperor Trajan.
The presence of a Christian community with its own bishop was first documented in the 5th century.
In the year 846 in Madaba, there was a powerful earthquake with dire consequences. Many residents died under the ruins of their homes, and the city itself was almost completely destroyed. “So! by night Ar-Moab will be ravaged and destroyed; So! at night Kir-Moab will be ravaged and destroyed! ” (Isaiah 15:1)
Only in the 80s of the 19th century, local Christians managed to clear the remaining ruins and build a new city on the site of the rubble. The first settlers were Arab peoples, mostly Christians. Currently, Madaba and its surroundings are inhabited by Both Christians and Muslims.
